May 2012

Those who have seen B.J. present will tell you his sessions are always informative, enlightening and entertaining. This year’s presentation will certainly be all that, as B.J. presents several lively topics and even presents one session wherein his co-presenter will be his dog Jack!

B.J. will present the following sessions at the APMP Bid & Proposal Con 2012:

· The Great Debate
· The Proposal Whisperer - Training Sales and SME’s and Rehabilitating Proposal Professionals
· Whose Proposal Is It Anyway? – IMPROVing Proposal Team Communications

The Great Debate:
You’ve heard the stories. Government proposal supported by teams of 1000+ people. A commercial proposal with a 2 hour turn-around time. Proposals for grants containing words such as sesquipedalian. What’s myth and what’s reality. And who cares? The Type ‘O’s do and, using a format similar to a presidential debate but without the negativity, they’ll tackle these questions and others in this enlightening, lighthearted and sure to be amusing session. The Type ‘O’s players are B.J. Lownie, Bobbie O’brien, Jay Herther, Robin Davis, Jeff Elkins and Rick Harris.

The Proposal Whisperer - Training Sales and SME’s and Rehabilitating Proposal Professional:
With a nod to the TV show “The Dog Whisperer”, BJ, along with his dog Jack, will present and demonstrate concepts and methods they use when training that a proposal team can apply to improve communications, become more creative, make work more enjoyable and have more fun!,

Whose Proposal Is It Anyway? – IMPROVing Proposal Team Communications
With a nod to the popular TV show “Whose Line Is It Anyway” and drawing on the exercises presented in the book, “Playing Along” (I. Gesell, Amazon), this session presents activities drawn from improvisational theater that can be used by a proposal team to develop communication skills and teambuilding. During this informative, engaging and highly interactive session participants will be introduced to several improv games and have an opportunity to participate in them and develop acceptance, spontaneity, creativity and cooperation.

B.J. is a very popular presenter at APMP conferences and his sessions are always well attended (often standing room only). Be sure to arrive early to get a seat!

Award for Alcatel-Lucent

March 2011

Alcatel-Lucent has recently been presented with the Strategic Proposals’ “Proposal Team of the Year” award for 2010.

In the EMEA region, the Alcatel-Lucent University embarked on an extensive training programme for Pre-Sales people. During the year, courses were delivered in nine countries, and more than 100 people passed the APMP Foundation qualification (with a 100% pass rate).

"We’re really committed to developing the skills of our Pre-Sales teams around EMEA, particularly in the areas of writing, project methodology and managing teams to develop consistent offers. We’re very proud to have been awarded this trophy by Strategic Proposals and look forward to continue working with them on the success of our future training programs,” said Monika Maurer, Alcatel-Lucent VP, EMEA Pre-Sales. Monika is pictured here receiving the trophy from Strategic Proposals’ UK Managing Director, Jon Williams:

Monika Maurer accepts the award from Jon Williams

In the USA, the proposal support functions within Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise Services Division (ESD) Bids and Proposals and Genesys are to be commended for undertaking a comprehensive assessment of their respective proposal capabilities and sought expert advice and recommendations for making needed improvements. They then acted very quickly upon those recommendations. They conducted sessions for senior management and held training in which both groups participated together. As a result, the groups reviewed, refined and developed processes, aligning them with accepted proposal best practices. When and where needed, they brought in additional resources to ensure engagements were supported appropriately.

These groups have demonstrated their understanding and commitment to improving proposal support and to increasing the quality of the proposals they submit. We would like to offer them our sincere congratulations.

Helping 3Com to win a major blue light contract – Strategic Proposals live deal support service helps another client to win!

July 2010

‘We recognised the need for some proposal expertise to help our sales and technical team respond to a major opportunity with the largest police authority in the UK. After interviewing several candidates we quickly established that Strategic Proposals could bring us not only the proposal expertise we required, but also an insight in to how buyers view proposals.

Two of their team, led by Graham Ablett, then guided us through a structured proposal management and writing process. The result was the best proposal that I've ever seen 3Com produce. The great news was that the customer loved it as well and we won the business! I'd recommend working with the Strategic Proposals team again.’

Chris Huggett, VP, 3Com (now HP)

Strategic Proposals helps Working Links to prepare themselves for a major government tender through our pre-proposal planning workshop

June 2010

'We engaged Strategic Proposals to come in and conduct a full day workshop to test our preparation for a large scale tender response for the DWP’s Personal Employment Plan (PEP). This was a strategic opportunity for us, worth over £300m, and we wanted to check whether we were doing the right things in advance of the issue of the ITT.

We had never formally done this before, so we decided to get the team together and review our position using the Strategic Proposal Pre-Proposal Planning Workshop. The session proved invaluable and highlighted many areas of the campaign that we needed to enhance in advance of ITT release. It also gave us some re-assurance that in some areas, we were moving in the right direction.

As a result of the workshop we were able to put a more detailed bid plan together and task the team to start engaging earlier in the process to start to do the pre-work that will make the ITT response easier and lead to a better quality response. We were even able to start storyboarding our response and workshopping our solution prior to RFP release – when the ITT arrived we were in a better position to kick off the bid than we had been on the previous few large scale bids.

We recognise Graham and Jon as experts in the bid and proposal management industry who can provide razor sharp focus to any major bidding programme.'

Helen Clark, Head of Bid Management (Employment) at Working Links

May 2010

Reflecting the “Going Green” theme of this year’s APMP conference, Strategic Proposals is proud to publish our new corporate environmental policy. The policy – which we believe to be a first in the proposal training / consultancy market - has the active support of our international businesses. It commits us to a clear set of actions that will minimise the environmental impact of our operations, and to helping to promote the “green agenda” within the profession.

Successful live proposal and presentation support delivered by the team

May 2010

Successful support delivered to a defence/telecommunications provider: ‘The Strategic Proposals team, led by Graham Ablett, provided expert advice and support throughout the proposal development and presentation phases of our recent bid. Their expert help, support and insights in to purchasing were crucial in getting us through the first few rounds of the central government procurement process that we were faced with. From helping define the initial proposal strategy, through to rehearsing the presentation with us - they always added value. I would highly recommend working with them.’ - Derek Evans, Account Manager, Selex Communications

Strategic Proposals hits the 21st Annual APMP International Conference

May 2010

This June several members of the team are presenting at the annual APMP conference in Walt Disney World, Orlando, Florida. If you want to join them, click here to find out more.

Using the conference venue for inspiration, Jon and BJ will present 'Proposal World - The Theme Park' in which they'll take the audience on a virtual journey of a theme park exploring the pleasures and perils of proposal development. Graham, Richard and Diane are joined by Strategic Proposals partners from Australia (Nigel Dennis, Bid Write), South Africa (Sandy Pullinger, nFold) and Switzerland (Chris Kaelin, CSK Management) in the presentation all about how to maximise success when working on virtual, global proposals. Their panel discussion and workshop entitled ‘You say Potato, I say Tomato’ will highlight some of the key challenges associated with working on an international bid and provide ideas on how best to manage them.

And finally Jon takes to the stage again to present his “The Excellent Executive Summary” session. This will draw upon recent research with evaluators, which tested their views on the Executive Summaries that they receive. He'll also bring his in-depth, hands-on experience of developing executive summaries for "must win" proposals - presenting a blueprint for Executive Summary excellence.

All the sessions promise to pull in the crowds – we hope you get to see us in action or come and say ‘hi’ at our conference stand.

BJ Lownie's conference appearances

October 2009

BJ presented at two APMP Chapter annual conferences in October, Nor'easters and SPAC.

For the Nor'easter conference, held in Boston on October 15th, he delivered the closing session - "Bravo! Developing, Preparing For and Delivering High-Impact, High Quality Presentations". BJ had the triple challenge of being the last session of the conference (immediately before cocktails!), as well as presenting a session on presentations, which meant the slightest misstep would be amplified, and also following several very powerful and well received presentations. The session was very well received, especially as BJ was clever enough to finish a few minutes early, thereby allowing participants to get to the cocktails a bit sooner.

He presented, "Survival Guide" as part of the Little Shop of Proposal Horrors theme of the SPAC conference in Atlanta GA, on October 29th. This was the after lunch session and the conference committee was counting on BJ to bring some much needed energy and to wake the audience up. He didn't fail to deliver, having participants fully engaged throughout. A highlight of the presentation was the "Survival Game', wherein two teams competed to present containment and contingency plans for potential problems.

APMP Accreditation Update

October 2009

All of the participants of two APMP Foundation Level Accreditation Exam Preparation Workshops held recently passed the exam, for a total of 29 people newly APMP accredited at the Foundation Level. Congratulations to all!

Readers of “The Proposal Guys” – the world’s leading proposal management blog – will notice some changes when they head over to the site. The content stays the same – around ten posts per month from our principal directors, Jon Williams and BJ Lownie, sharing ideas and advice on proposal-related topics.

But the site’s been re-designed, with the new version launched on 5th June. Jon commented, “We’ve had great feedback on the blog over the past three years. There’s now so much content that we decided to make the site easier for readers to navigate - and simpler for people to track down our advice on specific topics. We hope everyone likes the new look!”

You can read the blog online, or subscribe to our free email or RSS feeds. (Just scan down the right-hand sidebar on the blog’s home page if you want details of the subscription options).
